Alsergrund im Schaukasten (Alsergrund on Display) is a social design project about Vienna’s District Museums.

What potential and responsibility do museums have? For 10 days a dependance of a district museum was set up to investigate the possibilities of a democratic museum.
District museums are lovingly curated institutions with peculiar opening times, in which local history is presented.

With Alsergrund on display, a branch of a district museum is being created that focuses on the story of the visitors.  What could such a democratic museum look like in which all locals feel represented?  In which everyday life is exhibited instead of history?  In which the residents themselves curate?

Visitors are put to the test: Which emotions, memories, future dreams do you associate with the 9th district?  Which topics should be dealt with?  And how can these narratives be illustrated using objects?  The public is invited to bring objects and thus contribute to the collection of the temporary museum.
